...the Artistic Type - an independent illustrator and graphic designer with eighteen years professional experience. Working as a graphic designer I became increasingly frustrated by a perceived devaluing and replacement of art and craft by technology. Leaving my post as a director within a small agency, I re-invented myself in 2009 as the Artistic Type. This ‘mini-manifesto’ represents a definite move away from computer based design towards a more traditional, creative, hand crafted approach. My illustration portfolio demonstrates this through engraving style, black and white line work, which I later combine with contemporary elements, textures and type in Photoshop.

Whilst practising commercially, I've also recently completed a Masters Degree with the Manchester Institute for Research and Innovation in Art & Design (MIRIAD). The MA gave me a structure within which to explore, experiment and develop a natural illustrative style. My studies took me back to the Renaissance and the use of personification and emblems to represent intangible concepts. I'm particularly interested in the use of visual narratives.

My final MA project resulted in a contemporary retelling of William Hogarth’s narrative, “A Rake’s Progress”, interwoven with the history of Britain’s pub names and signs. This ‘Post-Modern Moral Subject’ series illustrates how breakdowns within our society (exemplified by pub closures and a high street in decline) are symptomatic of ‘rake’ like behaviours demonstrated by figures in positions of authority and irresponsible ‘role models’.

As an illustrator I have earned editorial, packaging and branding commissions for clients who typically value traditional art and craft as much as myself.
